FEATURE ARTICLE
Barack Obama - Video Strategist?
There was an interesting piece in the New York Times this past week on
the video strategies of President Barack Obama. Now before you read any
further (or don't), be aware that this is not a political piece. It is a
lesson of a particular video strategy that to date, no other president
has implemented to the extent that President Obama has. The reason for
that is easy to understand. Video is easy, video is informative, and
YouTube (coupled with the Social Media partners of Twitter and Facebook
- the SM Trifecta) is the new news. Here is an excerpt:
"Having recognized the power of YouTube during the presidential
campaign, when the BarackObamadotcom account uploaded more than 1,800
videos to the site, Obama now maintains an entire staff devoted to new
media. Making your own videos pays off. Where a YouTube search for
"George Bush" turns up mostly parody, TV news clips and gotchas ("George
Bush idiot," "George Bush shoe attack"), a comparable search for "Barack
Obama" is stacked with videos approved and uploaded by the campaign or
the administration. Users of YouTube may not recognize this. In the
eclectic YouTube interface, all videos - the parodies and the propaganda
alike - can simply looks like news."
I recently consulted with a large company for this exact strategy. I
call it the Google Roadblock. By leveraging their video "footprint," a
company can change the course of perception, history and the future.
Just like President Obama is.
Here are some lessons from Barack Obama - Video Strategist:
1. Record Everything - Take your Flip Camera everywhere!
2. Be Consistent - Get in the habit of posting a video at least once a
week.
3. Use Social Media -
YouTube,
Twitter &
Facebook are the Social Media Trifecta.
4. Mass Distribute -

Video Distribution Compared)
Addressing the last point; Pres. Obama's team has an Open Policy on
video sharing:
"Every one of the president's weekly public-address videos is
conspicuously labeled "public domain," and commentary is welcome. Plenty
of detractors weigh in. Name-calling - "socialist pig," "fascist in
chief" - jostles for space with praise ("Nice to have an articulate,
intelligent, thoughtful president again"). In general, the effect is one
of openness and inclusiveness, even as the shooting and spreading of the
videos has been tightly controlled."
So no matter your political views, you can see clearly that the Obama
team has leveraged video to their advantage. And continues to do so.

VIDEO GEAR REVIEW
Movie Masher
Movie masher is one of the most amazing
online editors I have ever used. And I have tried them all. Not only
does it work well, it is open source. That's right... you heard me...
OPEN SOURCE. For those of you not familiar with open source here's the
skinny.
Open source means that the code is
available for you to customize. That means you can brand it as you wish
and change it as you see fit. Think of it as PLR (Private Label Rights)
for source code!
Here are some features of Movie Masher:
- Trim, composite and timeshift
video
- Mix and fade multiple audio tracks
- Add effects, transitions, and
titling
You can change the interface and:
- Colorize and reposition panels
- Reskin and bind interface controls
- Build preconfigured effects
- Integrate with CGI scripts
AND you can:
- Enable your users to seamlessly
mix video, audio, images and text
- Control every aspect of the
editing interface and underlying functionality
- Build your own controls, effects,
transitions and titles in Adobe Flash™
- Deploy on any site for free under
an open source license (MPL
1.1)
"So what" you may be thinking. OK,
so... how about you:
- Offer it to your customers
- Rebrand it and offer it as a paid
or ad supported video editor
- Offer it to your clients as an
upsell
- Use it as a teaching aid
- Create an online end to end video
editing, hosting, distribution solution
- Target specific demographics or
niches (Video editing for seniors. Video editing for sailors. Video
editing for Teens.)
As you can see there are a LOT of uses
and I will be trying on some of my own.
OH forgot to mention. It's FREE! |
