HiDef DVD Production - What you need to Succeed

Printer-Friendly Format

   Sony's BWU-100A Blu-Ray Burner
This is NOT going to be an easy article to read. Why? Because the only thing you need is... Wait for it...

Patience

That's right - and a whole lot of it.

Now, that doesn't mean that you can't start getting ready. Matter of fact, if you plan on distributing on the net via streaming video, you should jump right in. However, if you want to join the big boys and distribute on HD-DVD or BluRay, I suggest waiting a bit.

OK, still with me? Good. Here is the easy way to get started without buying an expensive burner or HD deck.

Shoot 16 x 9 If you want to boost your production value up more than a few notches, start shooting in 16x9 (also know as letterbox or widescreen). Most newer MiniDV cameras and all the HDV cameras shoot in this format. Plus, the internet doesn't care what format you stream - it can even be 24x3 - whatever!

I recommend moving to the 16x9 format now for a number of reasons. First, it is "different" and different sticks out. Second, shooting widescreen takes a bit of getting used to. Start now and be ahead of the game. Third, it just looks better! Have you ever seen a movie shot in 4x3? There is a reason for that!

Edit in 16x9 While shooting in 16x9 is easy, editing in 16x9 takes some getting used to. While most of the latest editors (Avid, Vegas, FCP) handle 16x9 with ease, there are some tricky issues to tackle - anamorphic for example. Get started today and explore the wonderful world of square vs, non square pixels!

Distribute in 16x9 Since the web is "aspect ratio agnostic" (meaning your web pages can show any shape video) start today by posting your next video in widescreen format. You'll get first hand experience in what all the pixel dimensions, sizes, bitrates, etc need to be for the best images.

I'm a huge early adopter, however if I run out and get an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray burner all I could do would be burn disks for myself. None of my friends or family have these technologies yet. In addition, by jumping into the widescreen world today using your current technology, you'll be much better prepared.

NOTE: If you have clients that are yammering for HD-DVD (I don't yet) or think you could make some money by offering "Blu-Ray Burning" be my guest. It may be awhile before you turn a profit.
