“MP4 Format Basics With H.264 Codec”
Kbps = The amount of processing for encoding a video that directly effects the overall quality
Bitrate = Determines the amount of bandwidth the video is taking up.
When you take a master video file and need to put in the web, it should be optimized for playback, download and quality without one sacrificing the other. No other format can do that better than the MP4 format using the H.264 codec.
Creating Videos Just For Itunes/Ipod
Here are presets for creating very high quality podcasts.
All of the examples above produce maximum quality and take up a larger file space. With the settings above, a 3 minute video is 25 Megabytes.
To optimize the quality, download and minimizing hard drive space where videos end up being stored, here are the settings to use where you can have podcasts with up to 60% less size and still maintain quality. These podcast settings will also work with

“All In One H.264 and MP4 Video Publishing Blueprints”
Creating and publishing videos on websites, iTunes and iPods.
Open Up Your Video In Quicktime Pro and Select Export from the File Menu.
If you are exporting from IMovie, do the same as above, then click the Quicktime tab and select Expert Settings.
Select Share and you can now select your Export Options.
You will see a screen that looks similar to this. Under Video Format, select H.264
Now you can optimize the video by taking down the Data Rate from 1500 kpbs all the way down to 245 kpbs. This Data Rate can be adjusted lower or higher as needed to ensure proper quality.
Data Rate: 245 kbps is optimized threshold to 300-600 kbps for higher quality.
The size of your video can either stay at 320 by 240 or changed to one of the standard pixel sizes below
Small: 400 by 225 Medium: 450 by 300 Large: 512 by 288
Standard 4:3 (videos that are not widescreen):
Smaller size: 320 by 240 Medium size: 450 by 300 (Optional size is 480 by 320 for screen capture presentations) Large size: 480 by 360
Below are screenshots with different sizes and where to change the width/height of a video.
320 by 240 - Small: Used for classroom

480 by 320 -- Medium: For rich media such as PowerPoint and Keynote

After you enter the size of your video, select Current for the Frame Rate
Now select the Video Options button below the Frame Rate.
A window will pop up. Select Baseline. Below this, you will see Single Pass and Double Pass. The reason to select Baseline is because this profile setting allows it to sync to mobile devices and podcasts.
Use Single Pass for videos with minimal movement. Use Double Pass for videos with more motion.
Audio Format: AAC Data Rate: 32 kbps (lowest threshold for speech) - 96 kbps (higher quality) Channels: Mono (to make file smaller, although stereo can still be used) Sample Rate: 32-44.1 Khz (48 Khz can be selected with Data Rate of 96 kbps & above)
You can now export your MPEG-4 Video (.MP4) and publish it however you'd like.
