Video Tip: Remote Working

Printer-Friendly Format

Hey Guys & Gals

As you may recall, in last week's episode ;-) I got all wired up with my Broadband card and a Sprint account. I love it! I can now keep up with all my AskMrVideo.com duties and find great video tips while just about anywhere. YES - it DOES work 99% of my commute to NYC, even in the tunnels!

Now - to get further untethered...

I have some recommendations for you that will blow your mind. I know because I got so excited with this product that I spend the time I SHOULD have been spending on getting this Tip ready, pouring over it for three days.

Go out and get Four-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss. Yep, it's not a video product but a fantastic read by an amazing guy.

Tim details how he went from 70 hours per week down to 4. He did it by eliminating distractions and outsourcing tasks. It's fascinating!

Check out Tim's site, http://www.4hourworkweek.com and you MUST read this article: http://www.4hourworkweek.com/ferriss-book-outsourcing.htm

The above article, written by Editor-At-Large for Esquire Magazine AJ Jacobs, is a detailed account of how he outsourced his life using these resources.

Brickwork: http://www.b2kcorp.com/ GetFriday (part of YourManInIndia) http://www.getfriday.com/

Using these services I have recently TRIPLED the size of the Main Line Interactive staff and I'm getting caught up on all kinds of things.

Why outsource? Tim's suggestion is this. Figure out your hourly wage including travel time. If you can find someone to do your tasks for less, hire them!

I'm not outsourcing editing. Yet! However I was contacted today by a company that will provide editing for $6/hr. VIDEO editing. I may try it out on a sample project to see if this is feasible. It would all hinge on the ability to get the footage to an offshore site. I'm told FedEx is the way to go but I've not had good luck with them in some countries.

Why all this OUTSOURCING talk Perry?

Well the question to ask yourself as an entrepreneur is "Am I the bottleneck?" Am I the limiting factor of growth for the company?

As an editor or camera man, I can only do one thing at a time. As a producer, I can only work on a few projects at a time. There is a limit to our abilities. We don't SCALE! I want more time to focus on AskMrVideo!

Now, if you can leverage your skills, train others your systems and oversee the whole she-bang, THEN you have a scalable model.

So, I'm getting caught up on 9 months of QuickBooks data entry, developing some websites for clients and writing another book (and I'm not doing any of it).

One word of advice, start with a simple, non-critical project when you first start outsourcing. Test the waters and get used to the time/accent/culture differences there may be.

OK, OK. Here is a VIDEO tip.

One guy is claiming a 400% increase. I have not tried it yet but anyone with a slow connection should give it a look.

That's all I got.

Oh - forgot, The first annual AskMrVideo.com Video Challenge is underway. First prize is $500 and a camera! Check out the details here: http://www.askmrvideo.com/public/171.cfm
